Educational Requirements for Wind Turbine Technicians
First and foremost, a high school diploma or equivalent is essential, as it is the minimum educational requirement for most wind turbine technician positions.
While not always required, an associate’s degree in wind energy technology or a related field can make you a more competitive candidate for wind turbine technician positions.
Technical Certifications
Before being sent into the field, many employers require potential candidates to attend wind turbine technician training program at a community college or technical school. These programs provide a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience working with wind turbine components. Topics will include electrical systems, hydraulics, safety protocols, and other crucial aspects of wind turbine maintenance and repair.
A background in related fields, such as construction, mechanical maintenance, or electrical work will make this training easier, but these programs provide the baseline knowledge needed to safely begin work on wind turbines.
Special Certifications Required By State or Employer
Some states or employers may require wind turbine technicians to hold specific certifications, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour construction safety certification or the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Basic Safety Training certification. These certifications demonstrate a technician’s knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in the wind energy industry. Every company will require first aid and rescue training before going out into the field.
Physical Demands of The Job
Wind turbine technicians must be comfortable working at heights, as they often need to climb wind turbine towers that can exceed 200 feet (although in-tower lifts are luckily becoming more common). They should also be able to lift heavy components and tools, sometimes weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
Good physical stamina, balance, and manual dexterity are also important qualities for success in this career.
Required Skills
In terms of skills, wind turbine technicians should have a strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and repair complex components. Proficiency in using hand and power tools, as well as knowledge of safety procedures and best practices, is also essential.
Communication Skills
Effective communication and teamwork skills are crucial, as wind turbine technicians often work closely with other technicians, engineers, and managers to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of wind turbines.
