In August, the National Fire Protection Association announced its new Wind Turbine Technician-I (WTT-I) certification program. The certification is designed for individuals who are ready to demonstrate their foundational understanding of wind turbine components, operations, equipment, and safety procedures.

The certification program is specifically tailored for newcomers to the wind energy industry who have proven their ability to perform their roles safely and effectively, including individuals who have completed training courses in wind turbines and electrical safety that cover the exam blueprint and professionals with at least 6 months of experience working as a wind turbine technician.
Communication Skills, Technical Knowledge, Safety Procedures
According to NFPA, WTT-I certified technicians are recognized for their ability to explain, describe, and identify key features and components within the Wind Turbine Technician-I exam blueprint.
Communications skills and resourcefulness – the ability to troubleshoot problems and resolve them safely – are key to handling the unpredictable work that wind turbine technicians face every single day.
NFPA’s WTT-I certification is intended to identify individuals who can competently inspect and service wind turbines, including maintaining and troubleshooting various components. In addition, WTT-I certified techs are able to conduct basic energy testing and isolation procedures, apply lockout/tagout procedures, and – here are those communications skills at work again – to document the work performed on wind turbines.
How to Apply for the Wind Turbine Technician – I Program
- Interested applicants should visit the WTT-I program overview page and create a NFPA.org profile to access the application portal. From there, they can download the candidate handbook and complete the application, upload any required documentation, and proceed with payment. After submitting the initial exam application fee of $245, candidates will receive an email with a unique eligibility number and instructions on how to schedule an exam.
- To qualify for WTT-I certification, candidates must pass a two-hour closed book exam with 60 multiple-choice questions. The exam is administered worldwide at approved, proctored testing facilities.
